Pier Groups is an excellent and historically significant 1979 gay porn classic from director Arch Brown that is famously centred around cruising and fucking at the NYC piers. The piers, for many decades dilapidated but still standing, were an important New York City LGBTQ landmark, serving as a popular gay cruising locale and queer congregating space until their demolition began a decade later. This film predicts the fate of the piers in its premise: a seemingly-straight survey engineer (Johnny Kovacs) is sent to inspect them for a demolition company. His neighbour, well-endowed Keith Anthoni (star of Catching Up), is also headed to the piers, though for a day of freewheeling sexual adventures. Kovacs spends the film's runtime observing the ever-present hookups of Anthoni and countless other clones, the sex scenes growing bigger and kinkier as the film progresses, up to its raunchy climactic fourway. This popular classic works as a sort of time capsule, as well as an exciting erotic experience. The beautiful photography of the now-gone piers that makes up the majority of this outstanding outing from Brown captures and immortalises a particular time and place in gay culture.
